Former Chaplain Dies - Fr Francis (Ted) Burns PE RFD

May you rest in peace, good and faithful servant.

Fr Francis Edward Burns

Fr Ted Burns passed away in Melbourne on Monday 29 September 2025, aged 87 years. He was a priest of the Archdiocese of Melbourne, ordained in 1967, serving in several parishes of the archdiocese. He was chaplain at St. Bede’s College, Mentone from 1977-1990. He concluded his active ministry in 1998 as parish priest of Manifold Heights, outside Geelong.

Prior to his recruitment as an Air Force Chaplain in 1982, Ted served as a civilian chaplain from 1974 at several Defence establishments, including the Balcombe Army Base, HMAS Cerberus and Air Force. In 1982 he was appointed as RAAF Reserve Chaplain to No1 Stores Depot and Frognal in Melbourne. He undertook duty at RAAF Williams Laverton and Point Cook, as well as a relieving period at RAAF Butterworth, Malaysia. He retired from service in late nineties.

Over the years, Ted carried the duties of Catholic Chaplains across Army, Navy and Air Force, particularly at times when there were no full time Catholic Chaplains in the Melbourne area. He was admired by many in uniform for his love of service life, his commitment, sense of humor and care for people.

Thanks for your service.
