Frequently Asked Questions

Who can participate in an ADF pilgrimage???

Any serving ADF Member (Full-time and Reservist).
Civilian family members of ADF personnel are also eligible to apply to participate.

Will ADF Members receive travel funding for this activity???

ADF Members who volunteer to participate in any of the pilgrimages organised by the Diocese of the ADF will be required to pay for the individual cost of the pilgrimage. There will be no Commonwealth funding for travel.

Will ADF Members be granted "on-duty" status???

Participation of individuals, as "on duty", is subject to release and approval by unit/ship Commanders. Commanders are requested to support this as members will be conducting Representational Duties on behalf of the ADF.

VCDF has endorsed this as an ADF activity in DEFGRAM 302/2011

Further endorsement from the Catholic Diocese of the ADF, if required, can be sought though PRINCHAP-AF, Chaplain Peter O'Keefe (pokeefe@military.catholic.org.au)

Click on the red button on the left menu

How can I spiritually prepare for a pilgrimage to World Youth Day???

Contact your nearest ADF Catholic Chaplain. Contact details for ADF Catholic Chaplains can be found on the website for the Catholic Diocese of the ADF.

Will Sacraments by available during the pilgrimages???

ADF Catholic Chaplains (Priests) will be accompanying each group. There will be a daily celebration of Mass (where practical) and the Sacrament of Reconciliation can be arranged personally with the chaplains during the pilgrimages.

What will the trip across the Pyreneese Mountains be like???

At this stage, the French Military organisers have indicated that we will be walking approximately 12-18 kilometres per day. Logistical support will be provided by the French Military. Until we arrive at the French-Spanish border, accommodation will be tentage with limited facilities. It will not be a touristy sightseeing pilgrimage as offered by many civilian dioceses. It will be an amazing yet challenging hiking trip across some of the most naturally beautiful areas of Europe - allowing for a real spiritual experience!

Can I extend my trip before or after the official pilgrimage???

Yes. However, you will need approval from your unit/ship Commander and take additional leave. If you wish to make changes to your flights and other travel arrangements, please indicate your intent on the Registration Form. You will be contacted by GuidePost Travel Corporation to discuss your requirements. Any extension outside of the official pilgrimages offered by the Catholic Diocese of the ADF will be the responsibility of the individual. The Catholic Diocese of the ADF cannot provide support for extended personal travel.
